Understanding language teaching methods, with its techniques and principles, can help an
educator better guide its students. This essay will focus on describing three specific language
teaching methods with their corresponding characteristics.
The Audio-Lingual Method
The Audio-Lingual Method of second language teaching emphasizes on listening and
speaking development rather than reading and writing. The tecniques it utilizes are mostly
dialogues, mimicry and memorization and pattern drills.
The Audio-Lingual Method exhibits behaviorist views, as it focuses on human behavior to
condition students.
The Silent Way
The Silent Way Method encourages learners to produce their own understanding of the
second language without much intervention from the teacher. It is said that the passive role of the
educator helps students concentrate better.
The Silent Way seeks to facilitate learning by favoring independence, responsability and
problem solving.
Communicative Language Teaching
Experts cuestioned the results of the previous methods by argueing that prioritizing

Not one language teaching method is superior to another, but it has to be taken into account the effects each one has on the context it is being applied to.
