ALTERNATIVES TO IF

UNLESS if... not

You will fail the test unless you start working hard

OTHERWISE before the likely result

We ’ d better hurry up. Otherwise we ’ ll miss the start of the movie.

AS LONG AS/PROVIDED/ON CONDITION THAT stricter conditions

I ’ ll lend you the money as long as you promise to pay me back.

INVERSION

If I had known he would be upset, I wouldn ’ t have said anything.

Had I known he would upset, I wouldn ’ t have said anything.

WOULD (for present/future situations you would like to change) WISH PAST SIMPLE (to express hopes for what we want to happen or not to happen in the future) PAST PERFECT (for regrets which happened entirely in the past and we are unable to change)

I wish my brother would stop stealing my clothes.

I wish I was taller

I wish I hadn ’ t missed the party.

To express regrets, wishes and lost opportunities in the past we can substitute if only for wish.

If only I hadn ’ t said anything.
