Ladies and gentlemen, Today I want to talk to you about an issue that affects millions of people around the world: drug addiction. This problem not only destroys individual lives, but also tears apart families, communities and entire societies. It is a silent enemy that infiltrates our lives, often without us realizing it. First, let's talk about addiction. Drugs not only alter our perception and mood, they can also change our brain chemistry. This means that what starts as a choice can quickly become a necessity. The factors of drug addiction can be multiple since each person faces a different reality, but the main ones are: stress, social pressure, the persuit for acceptance, and curiosity; which can be an enemy in disguise. Don't get carried away with the idea that "just once doesn't hurt". That "once" can be the beginning of a dark and destructive path. Drugs can cause irreparable damage to your body and mind. From heart disease to mental disorders, the consequences are devastating. Life is a precious gift and we must take care of it, not put it at risk for a moment of ephemeral pleasure. Drugs impact multiple spheres of our society. They affect economic and social development and increase health care costs by being associated with injuries and more than 60 infectious diseases, including HIV and hepatitis B and C. Additionally, they contribute to devastating chronic diseases (Mayo Clinic, 2022 ). Drug use can lead to legal problems that can follow you throughout your life. It limits your job opportunities, affects your reputation and can isolate you from society. Is this really the path you want to follow? Let's imagine for a moment a young man full of life, with a bright future, out of curiosity or social pressure, he decides to take a drug and what began as a unique experience quickly becomes something devastating that causes an accident that
harms the people around him. According to the study, documented drug-related traffic accidents requiring emergency room treatment increased by 475% between 2010 and 2021 (LaMotte, 2023). After that problems I can say that not everything is lost, prevention and education are key in this fight. It is essential to talk openly about the risks and create a supportive environment for young people where they can voice their concerns without fear of judgment. We must also offer love and resources to those already facing addiction, advocating for policies that facilitate access to rehabilitation and treatment. In conclusion, drug addiction is a problem that affects us all. It is time to unite, educate and support each other to build a future free of addiction and I invite you to be part of this fight. Each one of us has the power to change lives. Stay away from drugs and it will be one of the giant steps you can take in life. Thank you.
