My architectural philosophy? Bring the community into the process
1. Describe the greatest power in design according to Aravena?: Synthesis,
essentially the combination of ideas or concepts to better solve a problem, no
matter how complex.
2. What are the three problems with global urbanization?: Scale, Speed, and
Scarcity.
3. Describe the first case where the power of synthesis was used to solve
design problems.: A mix between a house and an apartment was created,
typically a furnished version of the skeleton, allowing for home improvement,
and thus being efficient in company funds.
4. Describe the second case where the power of synthesis was used to solve
design problems.: Makes a case on how design can contribute to
sustainability, by taking basic psychological behaviors (The effect of the
greenhouse effect on humans, open and exposing areas, etc.) and altering the
surroundings to better control those behaviors to encourage coordination and
productivity.
5. How could you use synthesis in your life to solve problems?: It could be
applied to something as simple as a dispute between you and a friend. Let’s say
you and you friend agree to travel on foot for three miles and you plan on
walking while your friend insists on a hardcore run. Here, you could combine the
two (essentially averaging the speeds) and meet in the middle, agreeing on just
a jog.

Magical Houses, Made of Bamboo

  1. How do the homes capture the breeze in Bali?: Through the construction of large roofs that curve inwards, essentially sucking the air into the house and pulling it down.
  2. Why is bamboo ideal for building material with sustainability in mind?: As stated, it has the tensile strength of steel, compressive strength of concrete, and is hollow - therefore lightweight and easy to transport.
  3. Why was bamboo considered a poor building material in the past?: It was, until recently, almost unusable as untreated bamboo would be eaten away by insects.
  4. How is designing using bamboo different than using traditional materials?: Unlike traditional materials, bamboo is easy and cheap to work with. It also curves with ease which allows for the creation of gorgeous structures.
  5. What other unusual building materials can you think of that could be used to increase sustainability?: High pressure memory foam perhaps? My idea would be that the memory foam would be under the foundation of a high rise building to serve the purpose of absorbing seismic waves created by earthquakes, and possibly limiting fatalities in the case of a major earthquake.
