1. How is bioengineering different from biology? Biology and bioengineering could be considered similar but in reality they are different one from another. They are linked as biology builds it’s research on top of bioengineering creations. 2. Explain the separation and purification process. The separation and purification process is designed to make substances pure, it consists of breaking apart and building back substances in order to make them free of any impurities 3. Why are bioengineers interested in viruses? Bioengineers are interested in viruses because of the potential they have, they can be genetically modified in order to make them target special cells such as bacterias, and to reduce human diseases and suffering, or just weaponize them and make them more deadly than before. 4. How do viruses reproduce? Viruses don’t reproduce by themself, they trick cells into duplicating the viruses, this process will continue and viruses will keep being produced until the cell dies. 5. Why are viruses so difficult to combat? Their method of reproduction is the factor that makes them difficult to combat, for the moment we didn’t find a way to make the difference between the infected and the non-infected cells, and we can’t just destroy them all. It would cause the death of the infected.
1. How do you think that prokaryotic cells are limited since they do not have a nucleus? How does this make their function different from cells that have a nucleus? The prokaryotic cells have a limited DNA since they do not have a nucleus. They are limited in size and reproduce only byu division. They are simple organisms. Since they don’t have a nucleus they can’t combine to form larger organisms.
2. How would a bioengineer use principles of mass and heat transfer to address a problem in human health? A bioengineer could develop a solution to address hypothermia issues using principles of mass and heat transfer. 3. Why do you think that the use of genetically modified food is controversial? When modifying the genes of a plant or an animal multiple issues arise: -risk of dispersion in nature of this modified species or genes to other species -risk on human health of the modified gene -risk of insects developing resistance to this modified gene and therefore endangering of other species 4. Explain why biomaterials is an important part of bioengineering. As bioengineering involves solution development, bio materials are key as they are reflecting biology. Developing bio material helps the body to accept external devices (implants). 5. Why does biotechnology raise more ethical issues than many other fields in engineering? Biotechnology implies study and potential modification of biological material therefore it can impact life, nature or even the core of all beings : DNA. Any science that touches life raise strong ethical issues.
