“About the importance of speaking more than one language”
“I don’t need to speak another language, if foreigners come to Spain and they speak in their
language why I need to speak their language if I travel to their country, it doesn't have sense”,
I am sure that many of your have listened these words at least once time in your life, however,
you don’t have to follow others footsteps. So, don’t imitate them, have some personality and
learn languages.
Firstly, imagine that you visit another country, don’t you think that it will be easier if you can
communicate to the citizens in their language? It could be a benefit for you, on one hand, you
can learn their culture and their history not only by a guide, because you can ask common
people and listen to their opinions and experiences, and on the other hand, it’s more dynamic
and you could enjoy the trip more. For example, when I went to Palermo, it is important to say
that I don’t speak Italian. I wanted a simple thing as could be a ice cream, but I didn’t know
what language to use: English, French, Spanish? It was a very uncomfortable moment, which I
could evitate if I knew some Italian.
Secondly, knowing more than one language allows me to get to know people from other
countries, and also from Spain. How? For instance, this summer I was in an English camp, so if
I didn't know English, I couldn’t go there, and it isn’t only the fact that I had the possibility to
make friends from other countries, it is also the fact that I made good friends. One of the best
memories that I have is a note from our Irish roommates, that said that they enjoyed the week
a lot and they hoped to one day visit Granada.
Thirdly, not only about English, one of my best friends is from France. She knows Spanish
perfectly, so we haven’t got any trouble to speak, but I also speak a little bit of French, so we
can spend days speaking in one language or in another language, depending on the situation.
It means that knowing more than one language allows people to have a wide range of
possibilities of knowing people.
Now, you can ask me if I think that speaking a foreign language is as easy as if I try catfishing
you. I would answer that not, it’s difficult to speak another language. However, you don't have
to have the higher level of one language to speak with a foreign. So, what I want to say is that
you only need to have a little knowledge. It could be little, but it will be necessary to make
your experiences and friends better.
So, don’t forget it, speak another language, yes another language, and you life will be better,
the knowledge is also welcoming, and life is only one.
