Roberto´s death is the top news story of the moment. Roberto Carlos Pacheco
Villanueva, son of environmental defender Demetrio Pacheco, was killed from two
gunshot wounds to the head, on Friday, September 11, when he went out to tour his
forest concession, in Madre de Dios. Both he and his father had been threatened
many years ago, when the invasion of their lands began, getting complicated in the
last 2 years. The body of Roberto Carlos was found by his father Demetrio in the
middle of a trail that led to an agricultural field in the community of San Juan, a
property adjacent to the Pacheco concession. The head of the Office of the
Ombudsman in Madre de Dios, Guimo Loaiza, told the media that it is highly
probable that those responsible for the death of Roberto were illegal miners because
there is no other suspicion that they have... "Plenty of environmental defenders are
threatened by their outright opposition to these illegal activities” he said.
There may not be an official version but in my opinion Guimo's version is very
credible, because there are past and recent news that a lot of environmental
protectors are being killed in Peru and nobody knows those responsible ones.
