David Crystal - The Biggest Challenges for Teachers =
 Languages change so fast because of the internet (with the internet new terms spread faster) and
teachers have to move quickly because their students already know them.
 Not only the British accent has to be used, but traditional accents should also be respected, hence
teachers have to expose students to varieties, to accents with oral listening, they have to accustom
students to different types of English.
 Teaching and interpreting languages are the hardest jobs because of the difficulties of the
languages full of many aspects.
 Teachers’ salaries should be higher.
 This job is much easier now because of the internet, Google, videos, and Skype.
David Crystal - The Effect of New Technologies on English =
 Technologies influence languages.
 Social media too
 They develop and change any language style (short messages, tweets, blogs, differences in the
number of words, characters).
 Twitter = tenses and pronouns are used mistakenly.
  ↓
 News reporting service rather than a diary.
 The English language nowadays is almost identical to the one of 20 years ago, in 100 years maybe
there could be modifications.
 Authorities and well-known people say that the current society is destroying the English language
with short messages and abbreviations.
David Crystal - Will English Always Be the Global Language =
 Who knows what is going to happen, because we are talking about languages spoken by people
(influence of the society) and society renders a language global.
 English will stay a global language as long as certain things happen: the most powerful nations
continue to use it and the other nations want to interact with them and sell things to them (America
for example). But there is now a sign of less interest in English.
 The “global thing” is a new trend not present 30 years ago. Only nations can recognize a language
as a global one because of their need to communicate.
 American English is the most spoken. Americans want to have an American identity
(independence from England).
 The are many varieties of English because so many people speak it.
 The present continuous is the most used > (I am loving it).
David Crystal - World Englishes =
 Languages are used to talk, to express.
 English that is adopted by other nations is modified to suit them best (it may appear as a second
language, maternal one, or privileged one).
 Modifications appear in the vocabulary and make English difficult for its native speakers.
