Why do you want to be a nurse? - answer- During my time at USF, I learned a lot about the racial
disparities in health alongside the socioeconomic barriers certain populations face when trying to
get healthcare. Through learning this in detail I knew that I wanted to make a change as a Black
woman and person of color. I want to make sure that patients are being heard and are getting the
help that they need, especially women of color with how they're treated throughout their
maternity. While in South Dakota for my internship with the CDC and Johns Hopkins, I had the
amazing opportunity to visit 2 native reservations and meet with multiple Tribal Leaders. During
these interactions, I learned about the lack of healthcare that natives face in depth and ways the
leaders think we can help. I felt so strongly about this that I focused my summer research on this
topic. Armed with all this knowledge, I knew my calling as a nurse was solidified. I want to
become a nurse practitioner so that I can do my part to close the gaps in healthcare

At this point in my life, I hope to have finished my master's in nursing or in the last stages of that program. By becoming a nurse practitioner, I will be able to help my patients to my fullest capacity. How do you stand out? - answer- I think I stand out because I possess qualities that will help me as a nurse and have experiences that are unique, which will help me offer a perspective that is

different from others. For example, this past summer, I spent 10 weeks in South Dakota for an internship with Johns Hopkins and the CDC. While in Sioux Falls, I had the amazing opportunity to attend a conference on Autism, visit 2 different native reservations (Rosebud/Yankton), and meet with different tribal leaders to learn about healthcare on their reservations and what we could do to help. With this information, I believe my insight will serve as a thought-provoking way to treat future patients and will make me a better healthcare provider Why do you think that you are ready for this? - answer- I know I am ready for this because my time at USF has prepared me for a program of this caliber. While studying at USF, I was the New Member Recruiter and Public Relations Chair of Women of Today, Leaders of Tomorrow, while taking 15 credit hours and working 2 jobs. I was able to use my time management and critical thinking skills to make sure that I completed everything I needed to while maintaining a balance. I know that this program can be a lot to handle and can cause a lot of late nights/stress, however, due to the amount of things I've had on my plate in the past, I do not think that this will be a hard transition for me to make. Plus I think that any difficulties met in this program will only make me better prepared for life as a nurse in the long run. How do you tend to handle stress? - answer- During stressful situations, it can be easy to get caught up in all of the commotion, but when I'm stressed I try and take a second to remember what I am supposed to do before completing the task at hand. I, always, try to be prepared for these situations by thinking ahead and making sure I know what to do in as many scenarios as possible. I am a planner by nature and while I know I can;t be prepared for everything, I do like to make sure that I know the steps and procedures for what can be thrown my way. With nursing, I feel like this is very important as situations can be life or death. If you were treating a patient and they or a family member of theirs became verbally hostile, how would you handle it? - answer- The first thing that I would do would be to listen to what the patient or family was saying. I would focus on understanding what they are saying and try my best to understand where they are coming from. If I need to, I would ask some questions to ensure that I am fully understanding their perspective on the subject. With this information, I would then know what steps I could take so that I could diffuse the situation and alleviate any of their concerns. If the person escalated to violence, I would then follow the policy instituted by my place of employment as they are set in place to protect us.
