LANGUAGE FOCUS

For this task you will need to use the following structures from the CA1 self-study materials : 3rd conditional. When you write your article, make sure to include at least two instances of 3rd conditionals in your writing.

REVISION FOCUS Before you submit your article, ask yourself these questions to check you covered all the important parts of the assignment:

● Does my writing have the structure of an article (clear, organised paragraphs)? ● Have I followed the “introduction-main body-conclusion” structure? ● Is my article within the required word limit (200 words)? ● Have I used two 3rd conditional structures in my article? ● Does my article have an attractive title?

When you have finished writing the first draft of your article, check it for language errors. You can use the Writing revision checklist available in the classroom to help you.

Appendix 1 Sample Answer

Below is a sample answer to the essay task. As you read it and draft your own essay, pay attention to the following:

  1. Structure: Introduction - main body - conclusion. There should be between 3 - 5 clearly defined paragraphs;
  2. Paragraphs: Each paragraph should deal with different a theme / point;
  3. Language focus: You should use at least two 3rd conditional structures in your article.

Note: An article should be entertaining and should express your opinion about a topic. We are not looking for an entry into a encyclopedia. For this task you should only focus on the person’s impact and include conditional structures as you describe it.

Steve Jobs: The Godfather of Tech

Are you an Apple fan? I am a big fan of Apple products, and because of this I have chosen to write about Steve Jobs. Love him or hate him, he transformed the world of computing. If Steve Jobs had not set up Apple, the world would not have become so computer crazy!

Before Jobs, technology was functional and not something that people desired for their homes. If he had not been interested in design, we would not have known how usability and beauty could be combined in our everyday tech. Jobs was the perfect capitalist!

However, Jobs not only revolutionized the world of devices he also revolutionised music, and the distribution of music. Do you remember the days of having to go to a shop to actually buy music? Today, iTunes has become the most influential media delivery application in the world. It has changed the experience of listening to music for many people worldwide.

All in all, if Steve Jobs had not set up Apple, our experience of using technology would be very different from what it is today. His legacy was to revolutionise communication and make the world a more connected place.
