STRONG AND WEAK FORMS
Function words / lexical content
Only function words do have weak forms: articles, demonstratives,
conjunctions, prepositions, auxiliary verbs; as opposed to content or lexical
words: nouns, verbs, adjectives and adverbs
Strong forms only appear at the end of a sentence and when you want to emphasize.
-A weak form can be defined as an alternate reduced form of the pronunciation of a
word
-These words are of vital importance to the user of English as a foreign language bc
there are words which principally operate its grammatical structure
-Such weak form words can in one or the other of their forms seriously affect the style
or meaning of an expression
-The essential importance of weakforms lies in the fact that their use, which is universal
in all forms of mothertongue English worldwide, makes a very large contribution to the
charactised rhythm of the language and failure to use them, which is very common
along EFL speakers (have English as a second language), can result in bizarrely
abnormal effects.
