UNIT 5
CRITICAL THINKING QUESTIONS
REVIEW QUESTIONS
1. What is the difference between an internal combustion engine and an external
combustion engine?
An internal combustion engine ignites its fuel inside the engine, and an external
combustion engine ignites its fuel outside the engine
2. How is the field of physics related to mechanical engineering?
Physics is applied in a broad range of areas. It helps them figure things out like the flow of
fluids through pipes, or design of mechanical assemblies where components move, like in
an engine.
3. Explain the law of conservation of energy and why it is important for mechanics.
The law of conservation of energy says that energy can neither be created nor destroyed,
solely converted from one form of energy to another. Mechanics have to know that the
system they are working on has to always have the same amount of energy unless it's
added from the outside.
4. What is the goal of improving combustion modes?
The main goal of improving combustion modes is to improve automobiles and their fuel
systems. Vehicles are one of the most popular areas in mechanics because many people
considered them essential. Due to this, there are many trends in engineering dedicated to
improve its experience and to get the automobile industry into the next step.
5. What are the advantages of a higher degree in engineering?
With a higher degree, they can get better occupations specialized in what they want. It is
not the same fixing up a car and working as a constructor on a rocket. All those people who
want to get a better occupation or one that is more qualified needs more advanced studies.
Another advantage of this effort is that these people can earn more money each year
rather than any other engineer.

CRITICAL THINKING QUESTIONS

1. What invention would you argue has most impacted mechanical engineering? Explain your answer. A rocket ship because it leads to discovering more around our planet and our universe. It lets us discover what life is like in other planets or what kinds of climates other planets have. It's one of the most advanced inventions ever. 2. Unlike classical mechanics, which has been around for centuries, the field of Quantum Mechanics is relatively new. Why do you think this sub-discipline has recently emerged? Because it was not a basic need. We use them to improve our lives; even though we have great ones. It helps us understand better the world, but centuries ago that was not what the people needed. 3. If nothing can ever be at absolute zero, why does the concept exist? It might be possible in the future. We make new discoveries almost every day. The absolute zero is a concept, a tool that helps to understand why particles have no energy in that extreme temperatures and to determine measures. 4. When discussing Material Science, the author states, “The amount of existing materials on Earth is limited by nature and human knowledge.” Explain what this means to a material scientist. The sentence means that the only materials which are possible to study are those which exist. Material scientists cannot invent new materials from what is neither real nor proof. 5. Why do you think that those in mechanical engineering often do not have specializations as other fields of engineering do? Because mechanical engineering graduates do not mind where they work. They are able to work in any job or place with what they know about that field. In general, people who have studied mechanical engineering, can work in all that places where there is something related with mechanics.
