ESSAY - Areas affected by global tourism
It goes without saying that globalization has promoted tourism all over the world, and this
traveller’s flow has, obviously, positive and negative consequences.
The first point I’d like to make are the damaging effects tourism causes on the environment. As
can be expected, the large number of trips increases the pollution and can develop serious
problems on the air we breathe. Moreover, a situation that occasionally is overlooked, is that the
more tourist apartments there are, the fewer homes there will be and these will be more
expensive.
Turning to the impact it has on economy, many people, without being wrong, claim that the
survival of some local economies depends on tourism. At first sight, it can be considered as
something positive, however, this regions could be ruined if some sanitary or meteorological crisis
happens, such as it occurred some years ago during the COVID pandemic or as it is happening
right now with the Valencia’s flood.
As can be seen, tourism is an enriching phenomenon for most cultures, but it can also have
negative effects on the environment, the citizens and even their economy. Given this points, we
reach to te conclusion that it is highly important for some cultures to maintain the constant activity
of the travelers, but also, it is essential to control it and be aware of the possible damages it can
cause.
