Basic ChemSketch Tutorial
When drawing organic molecules, you may want to create the standardised benzene ring with
Aromaticity being shown (i.e. the bonds in the centre appear as one whole ring). You can do this by:
1. Pressing F5 to bring up the Template Window
2. Selecting 'Aromatics' from the drop-down menu at the top
3. Clicking the 'Benzene' icon and paste it wherever desired
4. Selecting the benzene ring using the Select Tool (1st icon top left below 'Structure' button)
5. To show the bonds as a ring, click Tools and scroll down to 'Show Aromaticity'

Creating concise NO 2 labels for the Benzene Rings or other unusual atom labels (e.g.: X, Me, Et etc). This can be done by:

  1. Clicking on the ' N ' icon on the left toolbar
  2. Drawing a bond from the benzene ring so as to create an NH 2 Group (using the Shift Key when drawing bonds ensures each bond is of equal length and automatically oriented according to standard angles eg: 90o, 45o^ etc...)
  3. Editing the label using the Edit Atom Label button towards the bottom of the left toolbar
  4. Making sure that the Formula Style Tickbox is checked, change the label to NO 2.

3. Alter the charge value of any atoms by double-clicking on the atom in question. In the

‘ Properties’ dialog box, navigate to the ‘ Charge ’ tab as indicated above and set as required.

4. Finally, draw the mechanistic arrows by using a combination of the ‘ Arrow ’ and ‘ Arc ’

tools under the ‘ Draw ’ tab. Once this is done, grouping the structures is recommended.
