Front Two vertical 2x4” stringers are 39.5” long

Rear two vertical 2x4” stringers are 51.5” long

Front and rear horizontal 2x4” stringers are 36” long

Right & Left horizontal 2x4” stringers are 34.5” long

Compost Bin Frame: 36” square base, 36” tall overall in front; 48” tall overall in back Upper Right & Left horizontal 2x4” stringers are ~30” long (cut a bit long to be sure to get angles correct)

Upper front and back horizontal 2x4” stringers are ~33” long.

Compost Bin Front Gate: 36” wide, 33.5” tall. Hinge on either side per your preference. OK to use gate hinges, door hinges.

CUT LIST:

TWO 2x4” boards @ 33” (top and bottom gate rails)

TWO 2x4” boards @ 26.5” (left and right verticals)

TWO 2x4” boards @ 30” (two center boards, spaced 12” on center)

You can miter the gate frame or butt-join it as shown. Pre- drill and secure with outdoor screws. The gate should fit within your compost bin frame vertical stringers.

Door hinges x 2. You can install them between the bottom of the lid and top of box frame, or along the outside edges of door and box.

Compost Bin LID cut list:

TWO 1x4” boards @ 36”

FOUR 1x4” boards @ ~28”, spaced 12” on center. Secure with outdoor screws.

Cover with minimum of ½” thick plywood or OSB, and overhang all sides by a minimum of 1”. Install roofing felt and drip rails along all edges of lid. Install any durable roofing material of your choice. We used Ondura Asphalt Corrugated Panels for our compost bin, and it worked out well.

Easy Lid Support: two options!

  1. Use a scrap 1x2” board and a small cabinet hinge. Attach the hinge to the inside lid, against the outer lid frame. Cut to a length that will allow it to fold flat against the lid when the lid is raised further before you lower it closed. Cut a small notch into the upper box frame for the stick to stay put.

Compost Bin – View looking into the bin from the top towards the ground:

INSTALLING THE LINER – We used Tuftex Polycarbonate Corrugated Panels as the liner, as they’re not going to break down and leech chemicals into our compost bin, but you can use whatever you like. If you use a corrugated polycarb liner, you’ve got OPTIONS.

  1. You can cut four pieces to perfectly fit the four sides, from inner lip of top frame to touching the ground, and then cut more pieces to overlap in the corners by 3-4 crowns/valleys. Not the easiest option!
  2. SIMPLEST: Start a panel near one corner. Trim it to fit for height. Then, simply insert it and let it naturally wrap around the corner. Overlap the next panel by approx. 3-4 crowns/valleys. Secure with corresponding nails/washers, ensuring that you don’t flatten the crowns.

**my apologies for the lame squiggle. I don’t “draw” much with the mouse. :-P
