Sample report An international research group is carrying out an investigation into the housing situation for young people around the world. You have been asked by the group to write a report about your country, including the following points: The different housing options available in your country for young people in their early twenties. The problems faced by young people with each option Possible future changes in the housing situation for young people.
Paragraph plan TITLE Reports should have a clear factual title. INTRODUCTION The opening paragraph outlining the purpose of the report. BODY 2-3 paragraphs Each paragraph may come under a subheading which divide the writing into different subsections. Use linking devices to connect the different paragraphs. CONCLUSION This varies according to the question. You may be asked to sum up the information, to make recommendations or to comment on possibilities. USEFUL LANGUAGE Reports are a formal type of writing giving factual information on a topic. It is usually best to avoid contractions and informal language. You can use the impersonal “It” construction and a passive, eg It seems that… It was found that … It is said that… It is also advisable to avoid making very definite statements unless you’re absolutely sure they’re true. Instead of saying It is for example, you can use a modal verb eg It could/may/might be or a more tentative expression such as It seems to be or It tends to be. Introduction: The aim of this report is to.. It is based on… This report is intended to.. It draws on This report looks at / describes.. It uses.. Reporting an observation : It seems/appears that.. It was found that... The majority / minority of … It was felt that ... Quoting: According to … As X said… In the words of …
