Metabolic rate is consumption of energy per unit time. The most energy consumption is in resting mood. Around 60-75% energy is consumed to perform basic functions like breathing. Energy consumed at rest is known as basal metabolic rate or resting metabolic rate. Metabolic rate is calculated through Harris-Benedict equation. The Harris-Benedict equation takes height, weight and age factors to determine metabolic rate. More on metabolic rate in lecture slides.
