"A separately compiled function can be regarded as an independent “black box” which performs a spe-cific task. Once the function has been thoroughly tested, the programmer need not be concerned about how it works. This frees the programmer to concentrate on the development of the main program. Moreover, if a better way of implementing the function is found later, it can replace the previous ver-sion without affecting the main program."
