The mass of the entire setup is (m+M), so downward force is (m+M)g. Upward force has to equal downward force in order for the system to move at a constant speed. Since the pulley has one end connected to the ceiling, the force the lifter has to pull is halved. The answer is (m+M)g/2...right? But it's not. And for kicks I tried (m+M)g/4 but that's not right either. Any thoughts on why this isn't the right answer? Thanks!"
